Today fans can get their first glimpse of Linkin Park’s new video, “The Catalyst,” but the boys stopped by recently to tease the clip. While not giving away any of the crucial details, guitarist Brad Delson tells us, “I know Chester [Bennington] almost drowned. And I was very sympathetic about it, but having seen the footage of it, I actually like how it looks when it looks like he’s drowning. Not that I would want him to drown for real, but the almost part, being the operative word, looks really cool.” Bennington says he’s used to being tortured in videos, and felt he got off the hook when the rest of his bandmates took the brunt spent a smoke-filled day on set while he watched.
But Bennington got his on the second day, and he tells us, “I got to sing with my head in the water, which was interesting because there’s a lot of holes in your head for water to go into and it went into every single one of my orifices, so to speak. It was pretty brutal.” Linkin Park’s “The Catalyst” video can been seen now on MTV and VH1.
From MTV UK
Linkin Park have spoken to MTV about their “immersive” new album and single The Catalyst- which is premiered right here on MTV.co.uk.
The group are back this year after a while away working on their new disc and will play UK live dates this Autumn.
“The Catalyst is a good set up for the album,” Bass player Phoenix told us. ”I think it’s a very good bridge to set you what ‘world’ the album A Thousand Suns is going to live in.”
He continued: “I say ‘world’ intentionally because I do think it’s almost like if you do give it a chance and sit down with it you can get a full experience, it’s crafted in a way to be more 3D and immersive.” Singer Mike said the band wanted to make more experimental music rather than radio friendly hits.
He explained: “We’ve had a good run at making songs that were shorter and concise and we’ve had a lot of success on the radio with songs that were three minutes long.
“I feel like with The Catalyst just to put out a song in its intended format, it’s almost six minutes long that was just kind of holding up the right directional sign post to the fans to say we’re doing something different.” Mike also talked us through the gloomy video for their new single, which was directed by bandmember Mr Hahn.
“My favourite part of shooting was the chalk dust fight thing that we did” he said. “We showed up and there were bags of coloured dirt…by the end of the day we’re throwing that stuff in each others faces.
“It’s part of one scene in the video, something we hadn’t done before but actually, I think it looks really cool.”
