Rock Radio Gets Interesting
Rolling Stone, 04/20/04
Heavy bands such as Godsmack, Nickelback, Linkin Park and Trapt have had a stranglehold on modern-rock radio for years. But another punk revolution may be in the works, as stations around the country are squeezing songs by bands such as the Darkness and Modest Mouse into playlists alongside harder stuff. The loosening of modern-rock-radio playlists means opportunities for many newer bands, such as the Postal Service, who have sold 224,000 copies of their CD thanks in part to nationwide airplay. Susan Busch, who works in radio promotions for the band's label, Sub Pop Records, says hosts with eclectic tastes at many modern-rock stations have recently risen to influential management positions. "There's a change in the guard," she says. "And maybe people don't want to hear Staind all the time." But so far these bands have caught on primarily in large cities. In smaller markets, such as Boise, Idaho, and Fayetteville, Arkansas, Nickelback and Linkin Park still rule. "What flies in San Francisco and Los Angeles may not mean much in Oklahoma City," says Bill Burrs, vice president of rock music for RCA Music Group, which represents the Strokes. "You look at the Top Twenty records right now -- it's Hoobastank, Lostprophets, Linkin Park, A Perfect Circle. Those aren't necessarily left-of-center artists.

Breaking The Habit video clip
posted by Jas, 04/30/04
Yes! I've seen a clip. MTV Asia showed a clip of the 'Breaking The Habit' video and announced that it will premiere on MTV on May 5. I was not quick enough to grab the remote control to tape it, doh! will try to catch it again and hopefully post a clip. Now about the video, it's different alright, there's a scene that is like a story board with hand drawn characters, like the AHA 'Take On Me' video and then there's part like watching a Japanese anime, if you've seen Kill Bill (part 1) you'll get the idea, it's too short to describe what it's about. Asian fans I suggest you watch MTV Asia the whole day today, I'm sure they will show it again. By the way, the Perfect 10 (Singapore radio channel) has officially announced 'Breaking The Habit' as the new single from Linkin Park and has started playing the song.

Breaking The Habit video news
Pop Matters, 04/29/04
LPU member Emmy posted this on the LP Underground Board:
I heard this news from Warner Music Thailand which I think it's a reliable source, they told us (LP fans in Thailand) in a Thai Magazine's Webboard called "ForwardMag" that they will premeire "Breaking The Habit" Video on 4th May in Thailand through both MTV and Channel [V] Thailand. Moreover, they told us that the video which is directed by Mr. Hahn (as we know) also has staffs from "Kill Bill" movie to help him direct this video.

Pop Matters, 04/29/04
It's one of the more peculiar aspects of live performance these days that video takes such a prominent role. These two fields, you might think, should be the antithesis of each other. Of course, the most interesting things are the ranges of different visuals that bands, and the people who design their stage presence, choose to use. This is also the case with Linkin Park, who have just finished their Meterora Tour. The man responsible in this case was Kimo Proudfoot, who directed their Live in Texas DVD. Proudfoot's use of material that would normally find its way onto a Linkin Park video and also using imagery reminiscent of the cover art for Meterora provides for an interesting viewing from the back of the hall. But it is all playback. Other than the subject matter, there is very little connection to what is happening onstage. If you are going to go the playback route, however, it takes an old-timer to show us how it should really be done.

Joe Hahn Of Linkin Park The Video Director
Undercover, 04/23/04
Linkin Park DJ Joseph Hahn has another talent. He directs videos as well. Hahn is the director behind Story of the Year's 'Anthem of our Dying Day'. Hahn used his position in Linkin Park to learn his newfound skill. He also directed their 'Numb', 'Somewhere I Belong' and 'Pts.Of.Athrty' videos. He must have done a good job for Story of the Year. The airplay the band has received through 'Anthem of our Dying Day' has sent fans into stores in large numbers to buy their 'Page Avenue' album.
The album was released on Madonna's Maverick label.

A dream comes true with help from friend
The Source, 04/17/04
Bryan Martins met his favorite band, Linkin Park, after he was diagnosed with cancer. When Sterling Heights resident Bryan Martins was in third grade, he began listening to the nu-metal group, Linkin Park. It didn't take long before he became an all-out fan of the group and his friends all knew it. One friend in particular, Elise DeLuca, remembered his love of Linkin Park and when things got difficult for her friend, she decided her gift to him would be meeting the band. "I sent Linkin Park letters and e-mails telling them about Bryan and waited," DeLuca said.

Heavy metal goes soft
Newsday, 04/17/04
Linkin Park's single "Somewhere I Belong" contains the confessional hook "I want to let go of the pain I've held so long." Smile Empty Soul's "Bottom of a Bottle" sounds like a session of relationship counseling: "My girlfriend told me I need some time alone to deal with issues." Staind's song "It's Been Awhile" is a virtual ode to one's inner child: "It's been awhile since I could say I loved myself." And the band Chevelle recently scored a minor hit with a song called "Closure." Some metal lyricists say their songs come from even darker sources. Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington has been fairly open about being sexually abused as a child. "I could have easily become a very self-loathing and self-destructive person," he said in a recent interview. "I've used that to fuel my music." Bennington also admits to spending plenty of time on the couch: "I go to therapy all the time. I think everybody should go." Staind singer Aaron Lewis, who has publicly hinted at a difficult childhood and bouts with depression, says he's tried therapy as well. "I found it very helpful," he said in an interview last year. But songwriting, he noted, works even better. "It's like psychological vomiting."

The Razz: Linkin Ruck
Daily Record, 04/07/04
It's the battle of the nu-metal giants as newcomers Lostprophets try to dump Linkin Park as a rock festival's headliners. The Welsh group reckon they will be the bigger act by the time of the Download Scotland festival in June. Our festival mole claims the organisers will be doing everything they can to keep the two bands apart because they are worried the rivalry may explode backstage. 'There are worries relations between the two bands will have reached boiling point by the time of the festival,' said our source. 'Lostprophet insiders are suggesting that the festival organisers should just put LP on top of the fliers and posters and let the people decide which band is bigger and better. 'Whispers from the band suggest Lostprophets see themselves as the band of the moment while Linkin Park are old news. 'Rumours from within the Linkin Park camp suggest that the band are growing uneasy at the excitement surrounding their British counterparts and are worried that Lostprophets will be the bigger band by the time of Download, jeopardising their place as headliners of the festival.' Day one of the festival at Glasgow Green on June 2 has Metallica,Korn,Slipknot and Himso far but it's day two on June 3 that is causing the biggest stir. (thanks to Jac for the link)

Opera crosses over
Newsday, 04/01/04
When Josh Groban comes to Manhattan tonight, he'll have Radio City Music Hall to himself. With his latest album, "Closer," selling nearly 3 million copies, Groban has become the poster boy for the classical crossover genre, an oft-derided but increasingly popular style of music. Crossover generally tries to make classical music palatable to pop audiences, but the genre's rules are changing. These days, artists often work in the opposite direction, taking modern pop songs and turning them into classical-sounding pieces. Groban, for instance, frequently performs an orchestral version of "My December" by the rap-rock group Linkin Park. Fans of both Linkin Park and classical music heaped scorn on the rendition, but Groban defends his choice: "The melody is universal, the lyrics are very universal and it's very poetic," he says. "I thought: -- it, let's put an 80-piece orchestra on it and see how it sounds. We went all the way with it."
