Collision Course review
posted by Jas, 01/29/05
A review of Collision Course from The Honolulu Advertiser

The first single "Numb/Encore" is pretty simplistic as it's basically Jay-Z rapping over Linkin Park's tune, but other songs aren't as basic. "Dirt Off Your Shoulders/Lying From You" splits the vocal work 50/50, and it's the only song to give Chester Bennington's voice its due. On "99 Problems/One Step Closer," Linkin Park's emcee Mike Shinoda takes over most of Jay-Z's lines (including the brilliant sham dialogue between Jay-Z and a cop), making it seem more like a cover than a collaboration. However, the best song offered is the third track, "Jigga What/Faint," which is brilliant. Jay-Z's voice and flow seem to innately match the hook of "Faint," but the match is brought together even more thanks to Shinoda's excellent production.

"Collision Course" is no doubt an excellent offering that both rock and rap fans can enjoy. The only gripe is the length: six tracks with a duration of a little more than 21 minutes. With such a short running time, you can't help but feel there's a lot of potential not being fulfilled. However, if you can overlook this shortcoming, you'll be in for a treat that's worth every dime of the purchase price. -- Jeremy Castillo. Full Review

Triad musicians to hold tsunami-relief benefit
posted by Jas, 01/27/05
A report from RelishNow.com about the Triad Tsunami Music for Relief benefit to be held Sunday at 11 Triad venues with contributions from more than 100 Triad musicians. The goal is to raise $10,000.

Organiser, Roulhac said that the benefit is connected with the Music For Relief fund (www.musicforrelief.org) started by Linkin Park, a national rock band, and connected to the Red Cross. "I did research, and this seemed to be the best source for making sure the money got to the people it was supposed to help and didn't end up buying a new car for some politician," she said. "It's funny. I couldn't swear I've even heard Linkin Park. But that doesn't matter. Their heart is in the right place." Full story

Radio's Hit Parade for 2004
posted by Jas, 01/27/05
The Post Standard has a report on most played songs on Syracuse radio stations last year.

Monitoring data from Syracuse radio stations reveal that Top-40 WNTQ-FM (93Q) last year played Hoobastank's "The Reason" 2,309 times, or an average of more than six times a day. In late September, The Dog tweaked its rock format by adding Led Zeppelin and other classic-rock artists to a playlist that had been dominated by new songs. But this change happened so late in the year that the station's final tally of most-played songs doesn't show many older tunes. Top songs on The Dog last year included ones by Jet, Nickelback and Velvet Revolver. Overall, the station gave the most air play to Linkin Park (3,921 plays of 10 songs), Godsmack (3,754 plays of 15 songs) and Nickelback (2,963 plays of eight songs).

A review of Collision Course from The GW Hatchet

Jay-Z vs. Linkin Park's "Collision Course" is an absolute draw between Southern California's powerful alternative metal crew and Brooklyn's finest hip-hop mogul. Linkin Park and Jay-Z have launched an intriguing course suited for all. Perhaps this is the true "best of both worlds," after the divorce of R/B and hip-hop with Jay-Z and R. Kelly's tour. Hip-hop has found a familiar partner in crime and reentered this courtship with rock - which, like hip-hop, is a rebel of society representing a different end of the spectrum.

Collision Course, equipped with 6 fusions of each artist's best, is accompanied with a DVD documenting the creativity and amazing chemistry between two groups that no one would have ever expected to collaborate. With the distinct styles of each artist, the CD integrates LP's feelings of insecurity and anger with Jay-Z consistent arrogant swagger and confidence of being a constant hustler. Do not be mistaken, although Jay-Z is a tyrant on each track, LP meets him head to head, locking listeners in a trance with their vocalist Chester Bennigton, and leaving them hooked with their electronic rhythms, guitar rifts and creative beats in songs like "Dirt off Your Shoulder/Lying from You" and "Jigga What/ Faint.""Numb/Encore," the first single to launch this album, is one of the highlights which helps ease the listener's transition to a new sound. -- Nicole King

Eminem, 50, Linkin Park Eyeing Tour
posted by Jas, 01/26/05
Reuters/Billboard reports that according to sources there are talks about a monster tour package that would include Eminem, 50 Cent, Linkin Park.

After a year when no stadium tours were on the road, very preliminary talks are underway for a monster stadium-level package that would include Eminem, 50 Cent, Linkin Park, and at least one other rock act, sources told Billboard.com. Rumblings of a potential Em/50 tour were bouncing around late in 2004, and now the concept seems to have expanded. The agent for both artists at the William Morris Agency could not be reached for comment. Given the multi-platinum status of all three acts, and the fact that 50 Cent and Eminem have been noticeably absent from the North American touring marketplace, the tour would likely be one of the most lucrative treks of the year. In 2004, Linkin Park grossed more than $35 million, 15th among all touring acts, according to Billboard Boxscore.

A brief review of Collision Course from The Nashville City Paper

While not quite as enamored of the music on the Jay-Z/Linkin Park Collision Course CD/DVD (MTV/Warner Bros/Roc-A-Fella), the DVD proves hard to resist. The Jay-Z/Linkin Park sets seem like instant chaos, but watching them going through musical and extra-curricular affairs on "Dirt Off Your Shoulder/Lying From You" or "Izzo/In The End" is equal parts astonishing, wild and weird. This truly was a "mash-up" in the fullest sense, rap converging with rock/thrash/noise and creating something from the mix that's sometimes unfathomable, yet is also gripping. The same isn't as true for the six musical numbers, mainly because not seeing what else is going into the blend makes it easier to hear where the Jay-Z/Linkin Park mélange doesn't work. However the enhanced CD also has extra features and photos, and the DVD is can't-miss material.

Chester talks about future plans for Music For Relief
posted by Jas, 01/15/05
Reuters has a report on a Tsunami Benefit shows hosted by Virgin Megastores. The events will be among the first major fundraising efforts for Music for Relief and Chester reveals future plans for the project.

Virgin Entertainment Group needs your help. On Jan. 20, VEG's Virgin Megastores will host "100 Acts of Support -- The Concerts for Tsunami Relief." Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington stresses to Billboard that the goal of Music for Relief extends far beyond the tsunami disaster. Just as the music industry collectively supports AIDS charities through such efforts as LifeBeat or cancer research through City of Hope and the T.J. Martell Foundation, Linkin Park hopes to create an ongoing music industry fund for disaster recovery through Music for Relief.

"Right now, the money is for the immediate relief for this horrifying event," Bennington says. "The next step is getting the army of people in this business mobilized. This is not something Linkin Park put together, but something the music industry put together that will build and have this nest egg of disaster money rather than having to build a fund from scratch each time."

Down the road, Bennington says he would like to compile a benefit album with proceeds going to Music for Relief, but not now, when the need calls for immediate cash. "We don't have time to sit around and make records right now; it's so extensive to clear rights, etc.," he says. "But for the length of the charity, it's something we would like to do." -- Melinda Newman. Full report

Collision Course review
posted by Jas, 01/14/05
Collision Course review from Northwest Herald.

I am quite torn on this album. Part of me wants to stomp my foot and say leave the rapping to Jay-Z and the rocking to Linkin Park, especially since I am a big fan of both. But after listening to the six songs, I am nearly sold on it. If Jigga Man and LP are OK with it, then why can't I be? But wait, wasn't Jay-Z retired? Ha. "Numb/Encore" is my favorite song on the album, with "Points of Authority/99 Problems/One Step Closer" coming a close second. With six songs and a going price of nearly $15, every song should rightfully blow me away. But they don't. Therefore, a perfect star rating would be a stretch, but three stars is justified. But I want more, a lot more. I want a full 13-song album. I'm hope MTV keeps up its Mash-Ups series. But next time, MTV, how about a few more songs? -- Nick Powills. Full review

" It's one of the top art schools in the world," says Shinoda. "It's hard to make it though the school because it's so expensive. It's such a great visual show and the music is so good and industrial. Live, those guys just don't f**k around. Definitely go and see them"

Mike describing Los Angeles
Black flag. Guns 'N' Roses, Linkin Park, The icarus line...from punk rock to glam-metal to rap-rock and beyond, LA has been a source of inspirational rock 'n' roll for over three decades. Motorhead's Lemmy liked it so much he moved there in the late '80s and has since become part of the furniture at the notorious Rainbow Bar and Grill. "If you come over you've got to go to Sunset Boulevard", states Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda. "There's The Whiskey, The Viper Room and all the cool venues where the hot new bands play. It's where we played some of our first ever shows." And, of course, The Osbournes live there. Say no more.
WHERE TO DRINK: The Rainbow, 9015 Sunset Boulevard.
Mike Shinoda: "Everyone goes to Sunset to hang out and everybody should go to the Rainbow at least once"

Collision Course review
posted by Jas, 01/10/05
Collision Course review from Village Voice.

So, since rap and rock are more likely to collude than collide anymore, this "groundbreaking" Collision Course qualifies as bumper cars at best. Mash-ups don't need to break ground, though—they just need to sound good. (Derrida-jocking rock crits will figure out the rest.) And though Jay-Z calls the collaboration the "hybrid of the hot shit," it's the exact opposite, really. The tracks come off two-faced, Jay-Z and Linkin Park not so much mashed up as pieced together in alternation. Jay-Z hardly struggles over LP instrumentals—his nimble "Jigga What" run over "Faint" proves he's still pretty much invincible, even in retirement. But with places traded, LP's Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington embarrass themselves, mere ensemble players who double Jay-Z in spots and pepper tracks with pasty catcalls. On their own, Bennington's wails are incongruous but at least inoffensive, and his minor-to-major melody trade for "Izzo/In the End" actually fits. Shinoda fares worse, though, huffing and puffing heavy-handed rhymes throughout, and at his most laughable when he reformats "99 Problems" to be about Jay-Z ("He's got 99 problems . . . ").

There's a DVD, too. Behind-the-scenes footage reveals Jay-Z as amiable but all business, maybe even a little bored. Collision Course clearly wasn't his idea. The Parkies have a blast, though, especially Bennington. One minute he's ragging on the cameramen, another he's screaming at the studio help: "I ordered a Frappucino. Where's my f**king Frappucino?!" As for collisions, there's a small one during the concert: Jay-Z tosses his water bottle to a fan, but instead it hits the kid in the face.

Collision Course review
posted by Jas, 01/10/05
Fiona has typed up a review of Collision Course from this month's issue of Metal Hammer (UK) magazine.

Nu-metallers team up with blinging multi-million selling rapper. So what was the attraction? Collision course follows in the footsteps of some of the most innovative and bizarre collaborations seen in the history of music. Run DMC and Aerosmith, Public Enemy and Anthrax and, erm...Redman and The Offspring. What past acts have done is to celebrate the differences between these two genres and play on the contrast between the roar of electric guitars and the rhythm of rap. What linkin park and jay-z have achieved, however, is something very different indeed.

On this album the artists have chosen to fuse their skills and blur the lines between metal and rap by remaking several of their classic songs, helped along by production skills of LP co-frontman Mike shinoda and decks maestro Joseph Hahn. Let's face it, we all know linkin park were never that 'heavy' in the first place yet on this album they play to their strengths by downtuning the guitars, cranking up the bass and making lead crooner Chester Bennington sing as little as possible with Shinoda and Jay-z sharing the majority of the vocal roles. 'Collision course' is essentially a well crafted bootleg with each track taking an orginal Linkin park and Jay-z composition and mixing them together. Yep, exactly like the much loved bootleg that mixed Metallica's black album with the Beatles' white album. Only this time around it's more commerical and a lot less cool.

Compositions include LP's 'numb' mixed with Jay-z's 'Encore': Jay-Z's notorious 'Big pimpin' with 'papercut' and 'jigga-what' with 'faint' . When this works it works well and will have dance floors around the globe erupting into a bass-led frenzy. But when it fails it folps miserably and even weakens the original track rather than embellishes it. Making a stab at good ol' VFM (Value for money) the album is accompanied by a 'Making of..' DVD which features live performances of the tracks and a fly-on-the-wall, in studio report. But that's just not enough reason to shell out on the whole album. Instead, find the tracks you like and download them. [3 out of 10] -- Katie Parsons

Linkin Park says their music attracts fans of all ages

Elaine sent me a link to a short LP article posted on The Point 105.7 FM

Linkin Park has realized that it's not just young people who enjoy their music. Kids are introducing the group's albums to their parents, who turn out to be huge fans and end up filling the stands at Linkin Park shows. Singer Chester Bennington told us that their music seems to appeal to people of all different ages: "My Dad was in this record store, and this lady was talking to one of the employees -- 'What to get my daughter or something? She doesn't like pop. She doesn't want Britney.' And my Dad goes, 'Oh, get her Linkin Park.' He goes, 'They don't cuss.' She goes, 'Oh great.' So, she just walked over and picked it up. And like it's that simple for parents to buy music for kids. And so it's interesting when parents do that. Then they take it home and listen to it. All of a sudden they become fans."

Linkin Park recently established an organization called Music for Relief, to aid victims of the tsunamis in Southeast Asia, and made an initial donation of $100,000 to the fund. Guitarist Brad Delson posted on a note on linkinpark.com that read, "We are fortunate to be in a position to help, but this needs to be a broader effort." He added, "If one of our fans can donate $10, then that's going to help. We are also going to appeal to our musical peers by asking them to donate as well." Meanwhile, Linkin Park is taking some time off from the road to begin work on their next studio album.

Rock band Linkin Park, fresh off a tour of Southeast Asia, has formed a charity with the Red Cross called Music for Relief. The group got the ball rolling with a $100,000 donation, and is asking fans and other artists to dig into their pockets. "We're trying to create awareness and all the money that's donated through the bands and fans and everybody out in the music community is going to go directly to the international response fund and go directly to help the victims of this horrible disaster over there," says Linkin Park drummer Rob Bourdon.

Moshing in the middle

A review of Collision Course from San Francisco Bay Guardian

But where Run and Aerosmith stirred rap's first mainstream audiences, Jay and Linkin promise to make their already gargantuan constituencies even larger. Where Run and Aerosmith were making a huge crossover leap and boosting a flagging career, respectively, "Collision" finds two of today's biggest Billboard-busters collaborating at the top of their game. Counting the million-some "Collisions" shipped since Nov. 30, the two combined have racked up more than 40 million sales. For better or worse, it might stand as the most salient rock-rap fusion for some time to come. Few will, but many should, consider how the years of intergeneric crossfire embodied by Linkin's 2000 LP, "Hybrid Theory", preceded 2004's inescapable "Collision" with a million invisible sparks of mutual influence. -- Kevin Y. LP interview in Q magazine
posted by Jas, 01/04/05
Fiona has typed up an old interview with Linkin Park from the summer 2003 issue of Q magazine (UK).

How do you celebrate selling 14 million copies (and counting) of your debut album? How do you reward yourself after playing 324 shows in a single year? How do you unwind after two years in which your previously unknown band has become a mind-boggling, multi-platinum phenomenon? If you're Linkin Park you do it like this.

"I bought toy robots," says DJ Joseph Hahn.
"I got a dog," says bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell. "That was a project."
"I bought some fake diamond earrings for 28 dollars in Macy's," beams guitarist Brad Delson.
"Just being at home after two years yo appreciate simple things," says drummer Rob Bourdon. " I had fun shopping for food. That was the greatest."
"We don't really take that many breaks," explains singer Chester Bennington. "On our breaks we work." Full interview

'Collision Course' crashes half the time
posted by Jas, 01/03/05
A review of Collision Course from Toledo Blade

When it works, Jay Z's smooth raps counter the razor-like aural scream of Linkin Park. Big loud guitars crash into hip-hop beats, bounce off and make a new sound that takes full advantage of both acts' knack for great hooks. When it doesn't work, and that's about half the time on "Collision Course," the music sounds bolted together, the tempo shifts lurching forward and clanging together like a grinding gear. Jay Z's "Big Pimpin'" just doesn't go with Linkin's abrasive "Papercut," no matter how cool the idea sounds in concept. Like the remix or sampling, mash-ups have their place — especially in dance music — but traditionalists ought to steer clear. -- Rod Lockwood. Full review
