Linkin park on 1LIVE photos and chat transcript
posted by Jas, 04/30/07
As I told you yesterday the guys will be live at Cologne radio station, 1LIVE today, actually it's just Mike and Joe, see photos here, they had a live chat after that, read the transcript in German, plus some photos. Martin sends a translation here. Other stuff not mention in the transcript are

- Mike loves German beer and likes Rammstein
- Joe likes David Hasselhoff.
- On Rick Rubin, one of them said, "Rick teaches bands how to record their albums. He's a great teacher, because he teaches you how to learn."
- They both like Asparagus (Spargel) best in Germany.
- When asked if they will dance into May (a German tradition), they said they were born to dance.
- They said they have also tried "Kölsch" (traditional beer in Cologne) as well as Pils, and Schnitzel, Currywurst.
- After they were asked 3 or 4 times about where the rest of the band are they said, "we have killed and buried them".

Thanks to Jay, Iris and melleneverdies for the review of the chat, thanks guys. More tidbits from the studio interview at LPMB. Jay sent some screenshots from the webcam.

MTM promo from Warner Music Taiwan
posted by Jas, 04/30/07
Brief translation of MTM update from Warner Music Taiwan, translated by Joanne. There also seems to be some kind of promo here, not sure what it's about.

  • Warner Music Taiwan has not officially launch the pre-sales album session but Taiwan fans have already started their own underground pre-sales and it reaches approximately 10,000 copies, this is something that hasn't happened before.
  • Taiwan fans will get two different versions of this album : Imported US version (CD + DVD) & normal VD version. Both versions will have poster included.
  • On April 28, 3pm, there was an offical pre-sales activity in Taipei. Fans got a poster as well as LP logo sticker when they pre-ordered the album. This sticker has 9 different types. For more information, the fans can call up (02) 2839-3611.
  • Chester's visit to KL is edited by Taiwan and distributed from US HQ as the world wide promo clips. This clip can be viewed here
  • Linki Park is planning a tour to Asia next year on January or Febuary, they even plan to tour South Africa.
  • On May 7th, LP will be performing for AOL site and AOL will also brodcast LP's concert in New York on May 14th 9pm. Please kindly correct my sentences if necessary.

    Warner Music's advertising strategy
    posted by Jas, 04/29/07
Blogging Stocks talk about Warner Music's advertising campaign for Linkin Park's upcoming album, Minutes To Midnight.

Warner Music Group may be in a lawsuit with online retailer AnywhereCD, but the company is doing something right, and that appears to be their advertising. With the coming summer music season, all of the major albums by big artists are being released. Warner will release Linkin Park's third album Minutes to Midnight on May 15th, a highly anticipated album by the rock sextet.

The company appears to have taken the enormity of that band into their consideration of how to best market the album. The biggest change in album marketing I've noticed is the appearance of TV commercials that feature the new single "What I've Done" over the album art, followed by the release date (I've rarely seen a new album by such a large band marketed this way). Additionally, the album has been available for pre-order on Apple Inc.'s iTunes Store since mid-April, well before pre-orders are typically made available, and features "secret bonus tracks" that are exclusive to that store. In my local Best Buy store's weekly ad this morning, the album is also available for pre-order and carries special pre-order offers. The album is still two weeks from being released.

These rather minute advertising successes may not increase album sales, but they certainly increase the awareness listeners will have of the album and the release. That is what makes Warner's success this month vital for the company, especially as their prices slowly rise. Last week alone they increased steadily to gain nearly a $1.

LPnonpoint over at LPUMB reports that Buzz 103.1 in West Palm Beach is giving away tickets to Linkin Park secret show, you have to go to Buzz103.com on Monday and listen to the streaming broadcast all day to listen for the cue to win.

103.1 The Buzz is now streaming at www.buzz103.com. Check under our logo on the homepage to "Listen Live". In celebration, 103.1 The Buzz is sending one lucky Buzz listener and their guest to a secret Linkin Park club show somewhere in the U.S.

The only way to win is to be streaming all day Monday. That's right, listen to The Buzz through the online stream at www.buzz103.com. We'll play the cue-to-call for the internet listeners only (the folks using radios won't hear it). When you hear that cue, be the 103rd caller on the Buzz request lines at 550-9103 (or 1-866-954-7625 if you're calling from outside Palm Beach County).

The winner will get the Linkin Park experience of a lifetime, flying to an undisclosed location for a secret, intimate, rare club show with Linkin Park.

meteorarocker411 found the same contest to this secret show at 99X.com but you're too late, someone has already won the ticket. This secret show could be the New York concert that will be shown in select theatres and on demand or AOL.com on May 14, who knows so I suggest everyone keep your ears opened for similar contest on your radio station

Steffi reports that Cologne radio station, 1LIVE has posted their interview with Chester, it's in German. Stefan sent a brief translation on some of the facts from the interview

    - Rick Rubin helped the band a lot to release them from their old sound.
    - Chester loves the track "Bleed It Out" 'cause it has all the elements that is known from LP but sounds completely different.
    - The band have rehearsed 4 tracks for their upcoming shows. But after the album is released and the fans heard it several times they will play more and more new songs.
    - Chester solo project is again called "Dead By Sunrise". It seems it will be the final name.
    - Chester thinks he is the band's own image and fashion advisor because of his Ve'cel clothing line.

Linkin Park will be live in 1LIVE studio on Monday, April 30 at about 12 pm CET to answer some questions and then there will be a live chat with the guys after the show at 1:30 pm on einslive.de

    WID review
    posted by Jas, 04/23/07
A review of What I've Done from M&C.

Radio didn`t instantly leap on "What I`ve Done" just because it`s been a few minutes since Linkin Park released a new album. If this song is any indication, 'Minutes to Midnight' will be another hit-filled juggernaut in the vein of previous sets 'Hybrid Theory' and 'Meteora.' The genius of this track is that it packs a wallop even as it backs off from the heavily produced style of Linkin Park`s catalog - minimalism is the key. Piano and programmed drums trade off as the song`s focal point, nimbly skipping about. Brad Delson lets his guitar flare only when necessary at the chorus and bridge, while Chester Bennington holds screams in check. "What I`ve Done" is catchy and memorable. Prepare for airwave saturation.

Trumtram has posted at LPUMB a review of Minutes To Midnight album from German's Rock Hard magazine (thanks to Lila for the transcript), here's a brief translation from Stefan

  • It's a very postive review.
  • The album is 45 minutes long.
  • "Wake" is 01:30 long. ("dark instrumental track")
  • "Given Up" has raw, heavy riffs.
  • "Bleed it Out" is one of the fastest tracks on MTM.
  • "Shadow of the Night" has guitar sound like U2, and the rythym is like Nine Ince Nail's "Closer".
  • "Valentine's Day" is the slowest track on MTM.
  • "The Little Things Give You Away" is 06:30 long.
  • "In Pieces" has a progressive guitar solo.
  • "In Between" is described as a rather boring song
  • The rest of the songs is rated from good to very good.
  • 4 ballads, 2 hip-hop tracks and 4 heavy and aggressive tracks; over all the album is poppier and softer but also with rock and progressive sound.

"What I've Done" debuts at #1 on the BDS and Mediabase Alternative charts.

Musicrypt Inc., the leader in secure digital media distribution, today announced that it has successfully delivered the highly anticipated new single by the multi-platinum selling band Linkin Park to radio stations across the United States. On Monday morning April 2, 2007 at 7am ET, DMDS delivered the single "What I've Done" simultaneously to hundreds of radio programmers. This exclusive, historic delivery marks the first time that a major record label in the US has released a significant new single entirely by digital means to radio, thereby eliminating the major expense of producing and shipping physical CDs. Today, the song "What I've Done" debuts at #1 on the BDS and Mediabase Alternative charts.

The Warner Bros. promotional staff worked hand in hand with the Musicrypt marketing team for the week leading up to this release. This marketing campaign included a daily electronic notification (eNote) leading up to the release date, a 30-sec stream of the song and exact, to the minute time of availability via DMDS. Because of this collaborative effort, over 95% of Mainstream Rock and Rock Alternative chart-monitored radio stations were simultaneously and securely given access to "What I've Done" in the highest CD broadcast quality. My Chemical Romance is looking forward to Projekt Revolution.

Although Linkin Park has been keeping the lineup for this summer's Projekt Revolution tour more secret than a Dick Cheney meeting with the oil industry, that doesn't mean there's a gag order on the other artists involved. My Chemical Romance guitarist Ray Toro told us that his band is going to be there for sure: "We're definitely looking forward to it. There's a lot of great bands on the tour. I think, you know, Linkin Park, they're, you know, we've met those guys and they're a really great band. You know, they do what they do better than anybody else, they have a true love for what they do and, you know, they're all hard workers and we're excited to go out on a tour like that." Other groups rumored to be included in the Projekt Revolution lineup are Placebo, Taking Back Sunday, H.I.M., Saosin, the Bled and Mindless Self-Indulgence. There has yet to be an official confirmation of any acts.

    Review of What I've Done
    posted by Jas, 04/09/07
A negative review of What I've Done from Newsday

SONG OF THE WEEK. Considering how much goodwill Linkin Park racked up in recent years, with their collabos with Jay-Z and their knack for inserting interesting snippets - a techno swirl here, a hip-hop groove there - into their workmanlike, broad-shouldered, hook-heavy rock, "What I've Done" (Warner Bros./Machine Shop) plays it way too safe. There's no deviation from the well-worn formula of turned-up guitars, angst-ridden lyrics and Chester Bennington's yearning yowls - no Mike Shinoda rap, no intricate rhythms.

It's as straightforward as they get and even more predictable, made even more ordinary now that armies of copycats seeking a slice of Linkin Park's sales have diluted the band's style further.

They will need more than this to persuade people to buy the upcoming "Minutes to Midnight" album rather than screaming along to "Hybrid Theory" again.

    Q&A session with Chester Bennington
    posted by Jas, 04/05/07
Rolling Stone has posted an interview with Chester where he talked about Minutes To Midnight. They also have a preview of the album

For their ambitious, rocking third disc, Minutes to Midnight, Linkin Park made the bold decision to abandon the rap-rock style they helped usher into the mainstream. "It's already been done," says singer Chester Bennington, whose band brought in Rick Rubin to help find a new sound. (Co-frontman Mike Shinoda shares the producing credit.) "[Rubin] was the first person on our list of people we wanted to work with," says Bennington. "He seemed really into shaking things up." At Rubin's suggestion, the band, which typically writes in the studio, arrived with more than 100 songs sketched out and used studio time to structure and arrange them. "It was very tedious," says Bennington. "But in the end we walked away with a record we can live with." The twelve resulting songs include the string-heavy ballads "Leave Out All the Rest" and "Shadow of the Day," as well as more textured cuts like "The Little Things You Give Away," featuring glitchy, syncopated beats. The latter track's lyrics ("The levees are broken. . . . Six feet under water") suggest a Hurricane Katrina connection, but Bennington prefers not to divulge too much. "We're at an age where we're paying attention to politics," he says. "But we don't want to preach."

Mike talks to Launch Radio about 'What I've Done video.

Linkin Park's video for its new single, "What I've Done", makes its broadcast premiere on MTV and its official online debut via AOL on Thursday (April 5). MC Mike Shinoda told Launch that the clip, which switches between the band performing and stock footage of world events, was definitely intended to make a statement. "I think there's a certain, a few different statements being made in the video," he said. "It's very, you know, aware of the social and political climates here in the States and in the world, and, you know, it's not meant to be political per se — we're not a very political band, I don't think anything's being said in the video that has never been said before. I just think that this video is the kind of thing that could start conversations and get people thinking, and that's exactly what we want."

    Chester in KL press conference
    posted by Jas, 04/04/07
Malaysian paper, Harian Metro has a report on the Chester's
press conference in Kuala Lumpur, they also mention that he arrived with his wife and son. Brief translation below

Out of the 12 songs, probably only 3 or 4 have that Linkin Park trademark sound. Chester said they took a long time to think about and produce new sound that's different from before. "It was a conscious decision to not sound like our previous albums, Hybrid Theory and Meteora. We didn't want to restrict our music to a particular genre. With this album, we wanted to step out of the box. The important elements of Linkin Park are still there, but they are presented in a different way,"

Fans will realise that there is less rap in the new album, Mike took a brave step in singing lead in a ballad called 'In Between'. "The lack of rap in the new album happened coincidently and it was not planned. From the start of the writing process, Mike has written a collection of great songs in terms of melody and this song sound better when it is sung rather than Mike rapping. So we made a decision that Mike should sing it because he's the only one who can deliver it and it shows, his beautiful voice makes the song perfect."

On the change of Linkin Park's image Chester said, "We're not teenagers anymore and we are now more comfortable with the rocker image". Plans are underway for a world tour that will include South America, South Africa and Europe and they hope to come to Malaysia again.

Mike talks about the 'What I've Done' single

Linkin Park released "What I've Done" this week as the first single from the band's upcoming third album, "Minutes to Midnight". Band MC and record co-producer Mike Shinoda told Launch that the track is a great representation of the musical progression Linkin Park has made on the new CD. "I think it was a great song to pick as a first single because it's very indicative of what's going on in the record," he said. "Like, from the album title to the lyrics on just about every song, there are different takes on what it all means. It's gonna be interesting to see what people think of a song like 'What I've Done', you know, the first time they listen to it, versus the fifth and tenth time, versus the hundredth time, you know, 'cause it's gonna change. There's a lot going on in there."

The video for "What I've Done" went on sale, along with the song itself, at iTunes on Tuesday (April 3). The clip, directed by Linkin Park DJ Joseph Hahn, will premiere on MTV and AOL this Thursday (April 5). "Minutes to Midnight" arrives on May 15. Fans who pre-order the album through iTunes will receive a deluxe digital version featuring bonus tracks.

Mike has posted a message on the FM MySpace blog telling people to download the LPTV / album pre-order package at iTunes. Sure rub it in :-( here I am with spending power and I won't be able to buy it, well, it's their lost.

i just went on iTunes and got the LPTV / album pre-order package. if you haven't already checked it out, you have to go see it. the LPTV episodes are really great. maybe i just love watching all the guys doing such ridiculous crap, maybe it's just nice being nostalgic over all the tours in the past few years...whatever. i think a lot of you LP fans are going to like it and i wanted to make sure you know it's there.

anyway, it's a package deal; you get LPTV and the album (when it comes out on may 15th). pretty cool.

PS i called in to a lot of radio stations today, and they kept telling me how they're getting tons of calls saying "play the new linkin park." thanks so much ;)

Speaking of iTunes, Zack reports that the single is already the 10th most downloaded song on iTunes and the video is #2 on the most downloaded of the day. Oh and a quick shout out to Chris for re-doing the LP Times banner, thanks Chris *hugs*

    'What I've Done' review
    posted by Jas, 04/03/07
First press review of 'What I've Done' single

Linkin Park's first single from its forthcoming third studio album, "Minutes to Midnight" (due May 15), sounds the band's artistic death knell. After an opening of slasher-flick piano tinkling, "What I've Done" lapses into a melody so unmemorable you forget it mid-listen. Never a great band, Linkin Park showed flickers of genius on 2003's "Meterora" and the bad-but-interesting Jay-Z mash-ups on 2004's "Collision Course." Those flickers have been violently extinguished. "What I've Done" was produced with Rick Rubin, but it offers average vocals, unremarkable music and a DJ who must have been on a bathroom break during the 15 minutes the band took to write and record it.
