Chester Bennington sets sights on fashion world
posted by Jas, 08/31/08 | share
AZ Central has a report on Ve'Cel clothings 1st year anniversary party in Las Vegas.
In a day and age where the record industry is plagued by poor record sales, free downloads and shaky concert attendance, it's become essential for artists to find additional outlets for their creativity. Chester Bennington. lead singer of multi-platinum-selling rock band Linkin Park, teamed with his Club Tattoo business partner and former band mate Sean Dowdell and launched Ve'cel clothing last year.
The high-end line has emerged as a power house in upscale retail outlets like Nordstrom's in a fairly short amount of time. But when the first designs hit the racks last year, even Bennington wasn't sure how consumers would react. "We knew we doing some edgier stuff that was really more illustration driven," explained Bennington explained, at the Ve'cel 1 year anniversary party at Tryst Night Club in Las Vegas.
Those edgier designs and complex washes are the brainchild of V'ecel designer/president Josh Merrell. "We really try to convey everything that Chester stands for in our clothing" said Merrell. He communicates with Dowdell and Bennington about every other week to come up with new designs and marketing strategies to keep things exciting. "In the future we hope that V'ecel continues to grow organically like it has so far." Bennington plans on finishing his much anticipated solo effort before Linkin Park hits the studio in November to record the follow up to 2007's Minutes to Midnight.

PR Tour review: Maryland Heights, MO
posted by Jas, 08/23/08 | share
A review of Projekt Revolution concert in Maryland Heights, MO from STL Today
Near the top of Linkin Park's headlining set of the Projekt Revolution tour at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on Thursday night, singer Chester Bennington capped the song "Given Up" with a lung-busting scream, demanding, "Tell me what the (expletive) is wrong with me!" Without skipping a beat, band member Mike Shinoda followed it up with the non sequitur of the year, asking the crowd, "You guys havin' fun?" Well, yeah, Mike, but you might want to check on the guy to your left. The one with the tattoos? He seems kind of upset.
Of course, alienation and desperation are common themes in Linkin Park's music, but the power chords and occasional hip-hop rhythms that drive songs such as "Crawling," "Numb" and "One Step Closer" make Bennington's pleas and Shinoda's raps seem more cathartic than mere cries for help. The band's 90-minute performance was its first here since 2004. The crowd for its return was surprisingly small, though the numbers were likely held down by the onset of the school year –- the multiband festival started at 2 p.m. -– and by rain, which came and went during the proceedings.
But the band made the best of it, delivering blistering takes on "Somewhere I Belong" and "In the End" and showing surprising nuance on "Shadow of the Day." Without the tats, grim lyrical content and screams, Bennington's choirboy voice could make him credible competition for a slick pop crooner like Justin Timberlake.

The Top 14 Heavy Metal Men of Arizona

He now lives in Orange County, California, but returns to the Valley every year for the annual Club Tattoo anniversary celebrations.
PR Tour review: Cuyahoga Falls, OH
posted by Jas, 08/20/08 | share
A review of Projekt Revolution concert in Cuyahoga Falls, OH from the Plain Dealer.
At Blossom, the remaining main-stage performers mostly were content to rock, one way or another. They put fresh spins on various subgenres, too, from punk to heavy-metal. As usual, Linkin Park even managed to work a few hip-hop elements into a hard-rocking sound all its own. "Bleed It Out," "In the End," "Bleed It Out," "Somewhere I Belong" and other boundary-blurring songs found vocalist-keyboardist-guitarist Shinoda deftly rattling off rap verses, while vocalist Chester Bennington sang cathartic refrains. Turntablist Joe Hahn's embellishments on the wheels of steel also provided a streetwise touch. Bennington occasionally seemed to be in a different key than his bandmates. Still, when he caterwauled "Put me out of my misery!" at the end of "Given Up," raw emotion trumped perfect pitch. He got a hand on "Crawling" from Cornell, whose own set included a Bennington cameo during the grunge-era favorite "Hunger Strike." Full review

PR Tour review: Greenwood Village, CO
posted by Jas, 08/15/08 | share
A review of Projekt Revolution concert in Greenwood Village, CO from Denver Post.
I was taken with Bennington's stage presence/emotional state; there was no filter on, each verse seemingly bursting bubbles of traumatic memories for a man raw to his audience of hundreds of strangers. Linkin Park songs are saturated with I's, Me's and We's, and I noticed the dramatic reaction of those around me as they sang along with Bennington. Veins pushing out under the skin of his neck, Bennington screamed in virtual pain through songs like "Undertow," "Pushing Me Away" and "Breaking the Habit."
Not once flinching or turning his back on the hundreds of devoted fans, I think Chester Bennington is a bit of a rarity in music these days, as I don't recall seeing a performer become so overwrought with emotion as I did when witnessing Linkin Park. Stage presence doesn't seem to have an on/off switch for the singer, and this proved invaluable to Linkin Park's live show. I have to admit, I became uncomfortable with Bennington's performance as the night progressed, each song feeling like a barreling emotional blow. I left the venue impressed by LP, if not by their devotion to charity work (you can learn more about the causes supported by the tour at projektrevolution.com), but by their engaging and coarse live performance. Linkin Park live is like re-living a bad break-up over and over again for 45 straight minutes. But in a good way. Full review

PR tour review: Greenwood Village, CO
posted by Jas, 08/13/08 | share
Short review of PR concert in Greenwood Village, CO from Denver Daily News.
It was a full day of ear-blasting bands at Fiddler's Amphiteatre Tuesday. Doors opened at 1 p.m., and the music started off with Armor for Sleep, Hawthorne Heights, 10 Years, Atreyu, Street Drum Corps, Ashes Divide, The Bravery and Chris Cornell. Headliners Linkin Park rocked the Rockies in full force. Band members Joe Hahn, Mike Shinoda, Dave Farrell, Chester Bennington, Brad Delson and Rob Bourdon electrified a packed arena. With every song the band started the crowd roared with approval.
Both Cornell and Chester guest-appeared on each other's set. Chester joined Chris for "Hunger Strike." Cornell jested that he wrote the song thinking no one would be able to hit those cords, but he said Chester nailed it with no difficulties. Cornell joined Linkin Park for "Crawling," much to the audience's surprise.
Linkin Park debuted in 1999 under the name "Hybrid Theory." They then released their first full studio album, "Hybrid Theory," in 2000, selling over 24 million copies. Their latest CD, "Minutes to Midnight," is said to be the most fun the band has ever had recording, and features more of a hip-hop based beats with a rocker undertone.

Twilight (2005)
"Linkin Park was really kind of the undercurrent of that novel for me. I had Hybrid Theory and Meteora on a mix, and I just listened to them over and over again. They have a great rhythm for writing; aside from the tone of the song, the beat keeps you moving fast."
PR tour review: Albuquerque, NM

A blogger's review of Projekt Revolution concert in Albuquerque, NM
But I must admit - last night Linkin Park delivered quite a set. The sound was perfect, and the drummer, Rob Bourdon, stole the show with his drum solo. In fact, driving to the middle of nowhere (where the Journal Pavilion is located) was worth it just for those few minutes of drumming bliss.
Bennington was his whiney self, but I have to say that there were points in the show where he revealed that he actually is a good vocalist. He held notes longer on a few of the newer "ballad" type songs on their latest record, "Minutes To Midnight." For once, he wasn't just screaming his face off for an hour and a half.
And while I'm not the biggest fan of hip-hop, Shinoda's raps are sharp enough to keep a crowd entertained. He, too, also impressed me with his vocal range. He didn't just rap the whole night, he actually sang, and it was quite enjoyable.Underneath the hate and bad-ass attitude of the members of Linkin Park, there's a cute little boy band waiting to emerge. Really, though. If you have the chance to go to Projekt Revolution this year - I recommend it.

A review of PR concert in Phoenix, AZ from AZ Central, photos here
In true monsoon-season fashion, the rain started pouring down and the pavilion was quickly flooded with 2 inches of water near the pit area while fans in the lawn were soaked. After about a 30-minute delay, the lights finally went out and members of the Street Drum Corps appeared onstage in glow-in-the-dark body paint and played a short intro to the politically charged No More Sorrow. Phoenix native Chester Bennington had the crowd hanging on his every word as he sang "I've paid for your mistakes/Your time is borrowed/ Your time has come to be erased." The drenched fans jumped up and down and sang along to songs like Lying From You and Somewhere I Belong. The band really has changed a lot over the years. Bennington has become more of the focus and MC Mike Shinoda played guitar on several tracks, which added a heavier aspect to the show.
The singer really shined on Given Up, which features a 27-second scream during the outro of the bridge that he hit effortlessly and was still able to handle the chorus duties perfectly. Guitarist Brad Delson and DJ Joe Hahn should really take some stage tips from Bennington and Shinoda when they perform. Delson walks around the stage as though he's only in it for the paycheck and even hid behind drummer Rob Bourdon at times. Joe Hahn is even more disconnected on his platform of samplers and laptops.
Still, there was plenty of crowd interaction during LP staples like In the End, Crawling and Numb. There is a reason Linkin Park remains the biggest-selling rock band of the past decade. It's a combination of their dedicated fan base, solid live show and great singer, all of which were showcased at their Projekt Revolution stop in Phoenix.

We love, I love Projekt Rev, and I love being able to put together such a long list of diverse talent. Just being able to get on stage and do some stuff with Street Drum Corps and do some stuff with Chris Cornell each night, that's great. Artisan News has an interview with Phoenix and Mike about post Projekt Revolution plans and the time frame for the new album, download here
Linkin Park bassist Phoenix said their plans after Projekt Revolution include a trip out east and a trip to the studio. "Yeah, we finish Projekt Revolution at the end of August, and then in October we have two weeks that we're doing in China. Aside from that I think the plan really is to continue writing. We started writing in March, April, May, those three months those three months and got a good start on new material. And we're going to continue that and hopefully have a new project out by 2009. So, yeah, get back in the studio and keep writing."
Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Mike Shinoda joined Phoenix to talk about when fans can expect the new effort to be done. "Yeah, it won't take as long as the last record, I don't think..." [Phoenix] "We're like saying that now, but then we're just going to screw ourselves again," [Shinoda] "Two years from now we'll be, like, 'Uh, Sorry.'" [Phoenix] "If you've been following the band for a while you know not to listen to anything we say as far as when something will come out. We're never a good judge of how long something may take us to do. With that said, we did a good job pacing ourselves on this touring cycle. We're not burnt out. We're still excited about writing music. We're excited about being creative and looking forward to getting back in the studio and working. So that at least all points in the direction of things being able to happen earlier rather than later."

Sneaker Freaker interview with Mike
posted by Jas, 08/06/08 | share
Mike has updated his blog with an interview he did with Sneaker Freaker, he has also posted a message on the LPMB about the limited edition tour posters.
i haven't seen any threads about this yet, so i figured i'd put one here. who has pics of the limited edition LP tour posters we've put out on this tour? keep in mind, every city has a different poster design, and all posters were limited to 100 copies. they're really rare, and really valuable. if you got one, or know someone who has, post it here (with the name of the venue and poster artist if you know who it is). spread the word, i'd love to see every city represented in this thread

Mayday and Linkin Park join hands in benefit concert
posted by Jas, 08/04/08 | share
As I mentioned the other day, Taiwan's rock band, Mayday have been invited by Linkin Park to play at the China's concert in October, China Daily has this latest report.
Taiwan music group Mayday and American rock band Linkin Park will headline benefit concerts in Shanghai and Beijing on October 12 and 19. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the nonprofit organization Music for Relief to help with reconstruction of China's quake-devastated Sichuan Province, the Beijing Times reported on Monday. The charity show will last four hours, and each of the bands will perform for at least 90 minutes, the newspaper said. Chester Bennington, the lead vocalist of Linkin Park, said the band hopes the concert will call more attention to the ongoing efforts in the quake-affected areas and that they are proud to be helping the people in need. Music for Relief, a charity begun by Linkin Park in 2005, seeks to bring the music community together to provide aid to victims of natural disasters around the world.

LP1986soldier found more excellent PR tour photos from West Palm Beach, Bristow, VA here and here and more from Wantagh, NY. Thanks to all the Flickr users for sharing.
But despite all the earlier performances, Projekt Revolution is still very much Linkin Park's show. The band, who played a two-hour set, came out in a dramatic dark entrance, showing just their silhouettes. The crowd went crazy, banging on seats, jumping up and down, and girls screaming at the top of their lungs. Undeniably, they put on a great show, which featured songs like "Sacrifice", "What I've Done" and "Begging". However, the highlight came in the middle of their set, when Joseph Han did a solo breakbeat session that lead into "One Step Closer."

DBS and new LP album update from Chester
posted by Jas, 08/02/08 | share
Chester has updated his blog with news on Dead By Sunrise, he also said that the new Linkin Park album will probably be out late 2009.
Hey everyone it's me. Just checking in to get you all caught up on everything that's going on in my world. There's so much I don't even know where to start. O.K. so it looks like LP's gonna be done touring after this summer and we're going back to work on a new record that will probably come out later 09'. So I think now's a good time to finish the Dead by Sunrise record. That's really exiting because I've been waiting for the right time for awhile now. As I'm working on the record I'll keep you all posted on the progress.
Ve'cel is doing very well and we're gonna be building a street team from the LPU to pass some stuff out at PR. Everyone on the team gets free Ve'cel clothes for helping spread the love. If you can't find Ve'cel than go to your favorite stores and tell them to put on the shelves. Chris Cornell has been wearing our stuff almost every night on stage and I think that's really cool. I'm glad people like what we're doing. The shows have been great and all of the bands are kicking ass and I think I've made some great new friends like Chris and the guys from SDC. That's the best part of doing these kinds of tours.
I've been on the beach for like the past week in my mankini. I highly recommend it for it's offensiveness and the freedom from long shorts that lead to horrifying tan lines from the knees up. Anyway, that's enough outta me talk to you guys soon.................C
PR concert review: West Palm Beach, FL
posted by Jas, 08/02/08 | share
A review of PR concert in West Palm Beach, FL.
A band with a heavy investment in technology, Linkin Park played its usual state-of-the-art fusion of rock and rap, electric and electronic, on Friday at Cruzan Amphitheatre west of West Palm Beach. But there was a 20th Century, analog feel to the performance, and to the lineup that Linkin Park brought back to South Florida for this year's Projekt Revolution festival.
If Projekt Revolution '08 were to adopt a theme song, The Beatles' Get Back would do. Two American bands, The Bravery and Ashes Divide, recycled and occasionally updated '80s British rock. Power vocalist Chris Cornell performed hits from his days with Soundgarden and Audioslave. Linkin Park, the festival's founder and headliner, played a head-banging set largely free of special effects.
The few-frills ethic, combined with a nostalgia that seemed purposeful, made sense at a time of economic cutback and retrenchment in America. It also might have helped to produce a lively show. Linkin Park played as if liberated from their gear and their arena-sized carbon footprint, charging through hits including One Step Closer and Somewhere I Belong for more than 10,000 people. Lead singer Chester Bennington pronounced the ecstatic crowd "one of the best I've ever played for."
Earlier, Bennington wowed spectators by walking on during Cornell's set to help him sing Hunger Strike, an anti-poverty anthem from the '90s that Cornell had originally performed with Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. Bennington and Cornell harmonized handsomely on shared verses and took turns sailing impressively high-pitched screams over the seats.

What can Christian radio learn from Linkin Park?
posted by Jas, 08/01/08 | share
A blogger talks about what Christian music/radio could learn a thing or two from Linkin Park
When I listened to "Leave Out All the Rest" I asked my wife, "How come more Christian music doesn't deal with death?" I'm not saying that there are no Christian songs to deal with the reality of death, but you don't hear it too much, at least not on the local Christian radio where I live. That kind of music wouldn't fit the "positive and encouraging" label that so many Christian radio stations want to have. The problem is that life is not always positive and encouraging. Sometimes it really sucks. I appreciate that Linkin Park deals with life in this way. Full entry.
